St. Patrick's Day Tradition
Every St. Patrick’s Day, I know exactly where I’ll be—at my in-laws’ home, surrounded by a lively gathering of people who, whether by blood or by spirit, claim some connection to the Emerald Isle. It has become a beloved tradition, one that feels like stepping into a piece of Ireland itself, right here at home.
Somehow, my in-laws have a knack for finding every Irish person—or at least every person who wishes they were Irish—in the area. The house fills with laughter, conversation, and the unmistakable sense of community that defines Irish culture. Some guests wear green, others sport shamrocks, but all come ready to celebrate.
No St. Patrick’s Day is complete without food—good, hearty, comforting food. The back deck becomes a whirlwind of activity as dishes are laid out: tender meats, buttery baked potatoes, soda bread fresh from the oven, and perhaps a rich, savory Irish stew, depending on the year. There’s always something sweet to follow, whether it’s a slice of Bailey’s cheesecake, and Irish inspired neopolitan icecream or a warm serving of bread pudding.
As the afternoon stretches on, full stomachs lead to full hearts, and the real magic begins—the singalong. Someone picks up a guitar, a few others grab lyrics (though most hardly need them), and soon the room is filled with the melodies of Ireland.
"The Fields of Athenry," "Molly Malone," and "The Wild Rover" are just a few of the staples. Some songs are lively and full of clapping, others slow and wistful, but each one carries a story, a history, a piece of a culture that has endured for generations.
Voices blend—some strong, some hesitant, some completely out of tune—but none of that matters. What matters is the shared moment, the joy of tradition, and the way music connects us all.
St. Patrick’s Day at my in-laws’ is more than just a holiday gathering. It’s a celebration of heritage, of friendship, of coming together to share in something timeless. Whether or not you have Irish blood, on this day, you'll feel it in your heart.
As the last notes fade and goodbyes are said, before the evening truly ends, there’s one final ritual to honor: a whiskey with an e. Glasses are raised, a final toast is made—Sláinte!—and the smooth, warming sip marks the perfect end to another St. Patrick’s Day well spent.
With the last drop and the last goodbyes being said for the day, I know that next year, we’ll do it all over again—because some traditions are too special not to keep.
